High-scoring Creek Wood closing in on perfect season

No one is perfect, but the Creek Wood boys basketball team has come pretty close to perfection this season.

With just three regular-season games remaining, the unbeaten Hawks (22-0, 13-0 11-AA), ranked second in this week’s Associated Press Class AA poll, are one two undefeated TSSAA boys teams in the entire state.

“It has been kind of crazy,” Creek Wood coach Charles Taylor said. “We had the whole entire team back from last year. They were primarily sophomores and juniors, and we added a couple pieces as well.”

The Hawks are currently ranked second in the state in scoring (87.5 ppg.) – they’ve topped the 100-point mark twice this season – and Taylor’s squad has been beating opponents by an average of 30 points per game.

The success hasn’t seemed to go to the team’s head, either.

“I think it’s something natural with teenagers,” Taylor said. “When they defeat a team pretty handily early in the season, it’s hard to keep that intensity and focus the second time around, but we’ve been really pleased.

“We feel like we’ve played better since Christmas break than we did before it.”

Creek Wood notched another lopsided victory on Tuesday night, trouncing Montgomery Central 84-49 as senior Isaac Edmonson became the first player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark. Teammates Ross Cummings and Ross Plunkett are expected to join him in the 1,000-point club by season’s end.

The Hawks are now just one win away from securing the No. 1 seed in next month’s District 11-AA tournament, which Taylor has stressed is the team’s ultimate goal.

“We really haven’t talked about the streak or anything,” Taylor said. “We’re really trying to focus on being the No. 1 seed in the district tournament more than anything. We’ve got a big bull’s eye on our back and I think that has helped us stay focused. We know every time we travel in the district or somebody comes to our place, we’re going to be in for it.

“Who wouldn’t want to be the team to break the streak?”
