Fayetteville basketball team reaches 20-win mark

The Fayetteville boys basketball program accomplished a couple of feats this week.

The Tigers (20-2, 10-1 9-A), playing in just their 100th game in program history, rolled to a 65-34 triumph over league foe Forrest on Tuesday night, securing their first 20-win season in the school’s short history, along with the District 9-A regular-season title.

“This is our fourth year so we’ve got three seasons under our belt,” Fayetteville coach Chris Murdock said. “We did have a graduating class last year — we lost two players from that team — but this group right now, they have been playing together since seventh grade.”

Fayetteville, ranked fifth in this week’s Associated Press Class A poll, has increased its win total in each of the past four seasons, including last year’s 19-11 campaign, which ended with an opening-round loss in the Region 5-A tournament.

The Tigers, led by junior Nick Hopkins (21.5 ppg), strung together 16 straight wins to start 2014-15 before suffering single-digit defeats to Moore County and LEAD Academy.

Hopkins, who has started since he was in eighth grade, is closing in on the 2,000-point mark for his career, while senior teammates James Keith and Michael Parks each eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau this season.
