DIRTY DOZEN: South Side boys, girls move up

South Side’s boys moved up one spot to No. 5, behind Haywood, Lexington, Westview and McKenzie.

The final week of the high school basketball regular season will soon be upon us. Teams are trying to peak now with the postseason around the corner.

As teams try to make their move up the district standings to earn the best seed possible for the tournament, upsets happen. There were a few of those in the past week that caused a few changes in the Dirty Dozen.

Here are the new rankings:

Boys

1Haywood (15-AA) (23-2) – The Tomcats are still unbeaten in District 15-AA play and against any team from the state of Tennessee. Results: Beat Covington, Milan, Liberty. Last week: No. 1.

2Lexington (14-AA) (18-3) – The Tigers can secure the No. 1 seed in District 14-AA with a win Friday at South Side. Results: Beat Chester County, Scotts Hill, Fayette-Ware. Last week: No. 2.

3Westview (13-AA) (19-5) – The Chargers picked up two District 13-AA wins to stay atop the standings with Obion County. Results: Beat Obion County, South Gibson. Last week: No. 3.

4McKenzie (13-A) (20-3) – The Rebels earned four wins on the week, three in District 13-A play. Results: Beat West Carroll, Bruceton, Henry County, Big Sandy. Last week: No. 4.

5South Side (14-AA) (14-7) – The Hawks won two District 14-AA games with Lexington coming to town on Friday. Results: Beat McNairy Central, Bolivar. Last week: No. 6.

6USJ (D2-A) (18-7) – The Bruins fell short in a comeback to try and beat St. George's. Results: Beat Rossville Christian, Madison; Lost to St. George's. Last week: No. 5.

7Humboldt (14-A) (16-7) – The Vikings have secured the No. 2 seed in the District 14-A tournament with wins over Bradford and Halls. Results: Beat Bradford, Halls. Last week: No. 8.

8Middleton (15-A) (18-5) – The Tigers are in sole possession of first place in District 15-A with two games remaining. Results: Beat Jackson Christian, Madison. Last week: No. 10.

Trinity Christian Academy hosted Middleton High School, Friday, Jan. 16, 2015. Middleton fell to TCA, 64-58.

9TCA (15-A) (17-8) – The Lions dropped to second place in District 15-A after suffering a loss at home. Results: Beat Chester County, Scotts Hill; Lost to Adamsville, Last week: No. 7.

10South Gibson (13-AA) (15-7) – The Hornets split a pair of District 13-AA games, but they are still No. 3 in the standings. Results: Beat Milan; Lost to Westview. Last week: No. 9.

11Hardin County (13-AAA) (14-8) – The Tigers seem to be finding momentum with Will Shelton back on the court. Results: Beat Brighton and Covington. Last week: Not ranked.

12North Side (15-AA) (12-9) – The Indians split a pair of District 15-AA games, including a road win at Covington. Results: Beat Covington; Lost to Ripley. Last week: No. 11.

Dropped out : Huntingdon (14-7)

Girls

1Middleton (15-A) (23-0) – The Lady Tigers remained unbeaten overall and are still atop the District 15-A standings. Results: Beat Jackson Christian, Madison, Last week: No. 1.

2West Carroll (13-A) (24-0) – The Lady War Eagles picked up three District 13-A wins to stay undefeated overall and in district. Results: Beat McKenzie, Big Sandy, Huntingdon. Last week: No. 2.

3South Side (14-AA) (19-4) – The Lady Hawks won two District 14-AA matchups to stay tied with Lexington in the standings. Results: Beat McNairy Central, Bolivar. Last week: No. 5.

4Gibson County (14-A) (25-3) – The Lady Pioneers took their first District 14-A loss but rebounded with a win over Union City. Results: Beat Union City; Lost to Greenfield. Last week: No. 3.

5Greenfield (14-A) (20-5) – The Lady Yellowjackets earned two District 14-A wins over two of the top four teams in the district. Results: Beat Gibson County, Peabody. Last week: No. 8.

6Riverside (15-A) (17-5) – The Lady Panthers won twice in District 15-A play, but they have a road trip to Middleton looming on Friday. Results: Beat Madison, Adamsville. Last week: No. 6.

7USJ (D2-A) (20-4) – The Lady Bruins won a trio of games to sit on an eight-game winning streak with three games to go. Results: Beat Rossville Christian, Madison, St. George's. Last week: No. 7.

8Lexington (14-AA) (15-5) – The Lady Tigers are still tied for first in District 14-AA, but they lost to county foe Scotts Hill. Results: Beat Chester County, Fayette-Ware; Lost to Scotts Hill. Last week: No. 4.

9Haywood (15-AA) (15-8) – The Lady Tomcats are now tied for first in District 15-AA after avenging an earlier loss to Covington. Results: Beat Covington, Milan, Liberty. Last week: No. 10.

10Westview (13-AA) (17-9) – The Lady Chargers picked up two more wins in District 13-AA to go 8-0 with two games remaining. Results: Beat Crockett County, South Gibson. Last week: No. 11.

11Crockett County (13-AA) (18-6) – The Lady Cavaliers split a pair of District 13-AA games, but are still sitting in third place. Results: Beat Obion County; Lost to Westview. Last week: No. 9.

12Camden (11-AA) (17-4) – The Lions picked up two more wins and have not lost since the Christmas break. Results: Beat Big Sandy, Hickman County. Last week: No. 12.

The Jackson Sun has a 13-county circulation area, and those counties are Madison, Gibson, Henderson, Chester, Hardeman, Haywood, Crockett, Weakley, Carroll, Benton, Decatur, McNairy and Hardin.
