FRA falls to Knox Webb in DII-A state title game

Franklin Road Academy’s girls basketball team had a tough time matching up with Webb School of Knoxville in a 24-point loss in the region championship game last week.

Not much changed Saturday in the Division II-A state title game, as the final result was almost identical.

FRA settled for the state runner-up trophy, falling to Webb 64-40 at Lipscomb’s Allen Arena.

“We really fought hard,” FRA’s Kennedi Bell said. “I know we didn’t pull this one out, but we played hard and this was a really good season for us.”

Webb’s Micah Scheetz single-handedly tied FRA’s total output in the first quarter, scoring eight points to give the Lady Spartans a 14-8 advantage.

Webb (31-4) started the second quarter on a 5-0 run, leading the Lady Panthers to call timeout.

Webb players hoist the trophy after they defeated Franklin Road Academy in the Tennessee Division II A girls high school basketball championship game Saturday.

FRA (31-4) responded well to the timeout by sinking a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, but Webb finished the half on a 13-7 run to take a 32-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Webb continued to pour it on in the second half, extending its lead to as much as 25.

“They disrupted everything we did,” FRA coach Chris Hart said. “We couldn’t basically dribble the ball for a chunk of the game.”

Scheetz finished with a game-high 28 points hitting 5-of-6 shots from 3-point range on her way to tournament MVP honors.

Riley Casey led the way for FRA with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting and was the only Lady Panther to finish in double figures.

“Sadly this will be a bitter pill to swallow at the end, but it’s also a good lesson,” Hart said. “It’s a lesson in what it takes to win that game.”
