Creek Wood turns it up late to reach first state

Creek Wood mustered a mere 39 points through the first three quarters of Tuesday’s Class AA sectional at Pearl-Cohn.

However, the high-scoring Red Hawks, who came in averaging 86 points, hit another gear in the final period, reeling off 28 fourth-quarter points to secure a 67-59 win over the host Firebirds, as well as the school’s first trip to the state tournament.

“I think we just got over our jitters,” said Creek Wood’s Isaac Edmonson, whose squad faced a three-point deficit heading into the fourth. “Coach (Charles) Taylor told us to take over, and that’s what we did.”

The Red Hawks, who suffered a 19-point defeat at top-ranked CPA in Friday’s Region 6-AA championship, will face Fulton in the Class AA quarterfinals next Thursday at MTSU’s Murphy Center.

Edmonson tallied 17 of his game-high 27 points in the decisive fourth.

“I don’t know if it’s hit me yet,” Taylor said. “I’ve been in (Dickson County) my whole life, and no boys team has ever made it. I know what this moment means, but I’m not sure I fully appreciate it.”

Edmonson, the first player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark, converted a three-point play in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter to knot things up at 42-42. Moments later, the 6-foot-5 senior reeled off six points in a row, spotting the Red Hawks a four-point edge with 5:10 remaining, and the Firebirds (23-8) never quite recovered.

“The fourth quarter we kind of went away from the game plan a little bit,” Pearl-Cohn coach Raymond Pratcher said. “It was my fault. I didn’t do a good job of getting our guys back to the original game plan. They executed so well, but I didn’t do a good job of putting them in the right spots.”

Added Taylor, “We knew this game wasn’t going to be in the 80s and 90s. We knew it was going to be a slugfest, and thankfully we made that run — the run that we didn’t make on Friday night.”

Senior Jordan Sandifer tallied a team-high 17 points for Pearl-Cohn.
