Sectional roundup: Brentwood boys back in state

Brentwood senior guard Jalen Lawson wasn’t about to let his career end without another trip to Murfreesboro.

Lawson scored 24 points to help lead the Bruins to a 60-46 victory at Station Camp on Tuesday.

Brentwood (28-6) led the rest of the way after a 10-0 run to end the first half. Senior forward Grant Teichmann had six of the 10 points during the spurt, but Lawson took over in the second half. He scored 11 points in the second half, also helping the Bruin defense hold the Bison to seven points in the third quarter.

“We didn’t have any doubts that we were going to win,” Lawson said. “It was a total team effort.”

Lawson was a shooting guard for part of the season, but moved to point guard.

“We made the change to put Jalen at point guard, and he’s thrived with it,” Brentwood coach Dennis King said. “He’s got the ball 60 percent of the time now, and he’s been fantastic.”

The Bruins focused on Bison senior Kyle Anderton, holding the Vanderbilt football signee to two points in the first half. Anderton finished with 10.

“They play faster than they look,” Station Camp coach Seth Massey said. “They play bigger than they look, too. They’re impressive.”

Station Camp set a school record with 30 wins and was making its first sectional appearance in Class AAA.

CPA 75, Maplewood 54: Braxton Blackwell led four players in double figures with 18 points as Christ Presbyterian Academy pulled away from Maplewood in the fourth quarter.

CPA will play Brainerd in the first round of the state tournament next Thursday.

The Lions (32-4) led by eight (32-24) at halftime and nine (42-33) heading into the fourth, but outscored Maplewood (17-13) 23-11 in the final period to put things away.

Tyger Campbell and Micah Davis added 15 apiece for CPA. Davis’ all came on five 3-pointers. Maplewood was led by William Alexander’s 19 points.

Blackman 55, Bradley Central 35: Blackman will get a chance to defend its Class AAA boys basketball state championship.

A day after the school’s girls team secured a chance to defend its state title, the boys did the same.

Third-ranked Blackman whipped Bradley Central 55-35 Tuesday night at the Furnace.

Blackman (24-5) plays Maryville (26-6) at 1:15 p.m. on March 11 at MTSU’s Murphy Center in a Class AAA state quarterfinal.

The state tournament berth is the fourth consecutive for the Blaze, who are 108-16 over the past four seasons.

“This means a lot because it’s just not players, it’s a team win,” said Blackman senior Isaiah Hart, who was the lone starter returning from last year’s state championship squad. “We’re really a team. We’ve got a good base.”

Hart led the Blaze with 16 points. Teammate Christian DeWitt added 14 points and 10 rebounds. And Cedriontis Wilson had 13 points.

White Co. 66, Lawrece Co. 62 (OT): White County outscored Lawrence County 16-12 in overtime to earn a trip to the state tournament.

White County will take on Brentwood on March 11 in the Class AAA state quarterfinals.

Cade Crosland (19), Kordell Henderson (18) and Cole Vaughn (17) combined for 54 of White County’s 66 points.

Brainerd 57, Cannon Co. 45: Brainerd pulled away by outscoring Cannon County 19-12 in the fourth quarter.

Brainerd’s win snapped a 16-game winning streak by Cannon County (28-6).

Cannon County was attempting to get to the state tournament for the first time since 1985.

A.J. Daniel scored 13 for Cannon County.
