Oakland pitchers combine for no-hitter vs. Bolton

MURFREESBORO – Oakland used three pitchers against Bolton on Saturday. Bolton’s batters couldn’t get a hit off any of the three.

The Lady Patriots no-hit Bolton, winning 9-0 in the Lady Warrior Southern Classic on Saturday.

Lacie Rinus started the game and went two innings. Gracie Kirby pitched the third and fourth innings, and Hannah McCravy finished off the game by pitching the fifth.

The Lady Patriots (6-6) had lost their past two games in the classic before finishing the weekend off with the win.

“We had a rough couple of games, so we came in here with clear minds and know that we could do well, and we did,” said Rinus, an MTSU commitment. “We picked each other up when we were down, and always had each other’s back.”

The Lady Patriots scored six in the bottom of the first inning. Holly Shirey doubled, and Kirby singled her home. Rinus also doubled in the first inning. Oakland scored two runs on Bolton errors.

Shirey was 2 for 3 at the plate, the only Lady Patriot with two hits in the game.

“Holly Shirey is seeing the ball and hitting the ball pretty well right now, which is very awesome,” said Oakland coach Janice Morey.

Oakland had a total of six hits in the game, and benefited from five Bolton errors.

Bolton’s only scoring threats were in the second and fifth, when the Lady Wildcats had runners on third but couldn’t get them home.

Second baseman Kaylen Staylen walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a fielder’s choice groundout in the second. But Rinus struck out Anna Berry to end the inning.

In the fifth, the Lady Wildcats got runners on second and third with no outs. Riley Williamson walked and Anna Berry reached by error, moving Williamson to third.

But McCravy struck out the next two batters, Bolton’s Jordan Beavil and Brianna Frank, and Laura Bolton grounded out to second to end the game.

It was only a five-inning game, since the games in the Lady Warrior Classic have an eight-run mercy rule (instead of the usual 10-run rule) after five innings.

Oakland’s next game is against undefeated Siegel at 2 p.m. Tuesday in District 7-AAA action.
