H.S. BASKETBALL: Greer taking over Westview boys

A new coaching position was not something Mike Greer was looking for, but if the right one came open, Greer was willing to take it.

The right spot came open when J.B. Suiter left Westview to teach at Union City. On Thursday, Greer was introduced to the boys’ basketball team as the new head coach.

“This was a move just for Westview,” Greer said. “The tradition of the school speaks for itself. The community of Martin has a lot to offer, being a college town.

“There are great administrators there from the director of schools all the way down. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.”

Greer leaves South Gibson after coaching there the last two years and taking the Hornets to third place in District 13-AA and a spot in the region quarterfinals.

“It was a hard decision,” he said. “I have enjoyed the last two years there and the turnaround we had. There are just a few situations that when everything aligns, you have to jump at. This was one of those.”

Greer is taking over a Westview team that has been well established and coming off of a District 13-AA title last season with one senior graduating.

“Every coach is different and does different things,” Greer said. “It is nice to have particular pieces in place, and hopefully we will benefit from that. I am hoping to help them as much as they help me.”

But as for expectations of a state tournament berth next season, Greer isn’t putting stock in that.

“My thought is to put on the brakes there,” he said. “I want to let the kids enjoy the season. When the first day of practice comes, we will make the best of that practice. I don’t want to rob them of the joy of the high school experience by people’s expectations.”

Greer has been known for high scoring teams. In his lone year at Jackson State Community College, the Generals were second in the NJCAA in scoring.

The list of schools the he has coached at includes Camden, Milan, West Carroll, Henry County, Obion County, Jackson State Community College and Mississippi Delta Community College before the two-year stint at South Gibson.
