SMYRNA – Charles Westover helped turn Fairview’s boys and girls soccer programs into district contenders at the Class A/AA level.

He later helped make Centennial’s girls soccer program one of the best defensive teams in the state in Class AAA.

Next up for Westover is to try to take Stewarts Creek’s girls program to the next step and become a district championship contender.

He replaces Brooke Mayo, who stepped down with plans to referee college games. Mayo will remain as the boys coach.

“Obviously there is talent in the area, and it’s being groomed the right way,” said Westover, 37, of competition in District 7-AAA. “Hopefully, we will move ahead.”

Westover coached at Fairview from 2003-07 before taking over the Centennial girls program in 2008. He eventually stepped down due to a couple of back surgeries. He’s spent the past three years as the junior varsity coach at Summit.

“Honestly, until about a month and a half ago I was very happy at Summit,” said Westover, who is a special education teacher. “Then I started to get the bug again that coaches get. I saw the advertisement on the TSSAA Website and decided it was the right location. It was a good chance to coach a good team that plays top quality opponents.”

Westover went 84-37 with Fairview’s boys and girls programs. Fairview’s boys played in four district championship games under Westover and reached a Class A/AA sectional. The 2005-06 girls teams won district titles and the 2006 Fairview girls game reached a Class A/AA sectional. He was the 2004 Middle Tennessee coach of the year.

Westover’s 2011 Centennial team finished third in the state in goals allowed with 0.52 goals a game.

Westover said despite Centennial’s defensive success, he considers himself a balanced coach.

“The first thing I saw in Williamson County was to keep us in games, we could not make stupid mistakes,” Westover said. “We had to be very disciplined. That went beyond the back four. The entire team has to play that way.”

Stewarts Creek went 12-8 in 2014 and reached the District 7-AAA semifinals, falling 2-1 to 7-AAA champion Oakland.
