H.S. SOFTBALL: 10 locals honored as TSWA All-State
The Tennessee Sports Writers Association released its all-state softball teams on Friday morning and 10 athletes in The Jackson Sun’s coverage area were honored.
University School of Jackson led with the most individuals honored with three on the Division II-A team. Juniors Ally McFarland (pitcher), Addison Dunn (outfielder) and Anna Pearson (second base) were all placed on the team.
McFarland went 22-5 this season with 155 strikeouts and a 1.77 ERA. Dunn batted .532 with 27 stolen bases, 28 RBI and five triples. Pearson batted. 489 with 18 RBI and five doubles.
Four area athletes were honored on the Class AA list, and all four athletes helped lead their teams to the state tournament this season.
Class AA runner-up Lexington had two honorees with sophomore Samantha McDaniel (first base) and freshman Kaitlyn Kelley (second base).
McDaniel, The Jackson Sun’s 2015 Softball Player of the Year, batted .490 this season with 22 doubles and 14 home runs along with 45 runs scored. Kelley batted .477 with 19 home runs, 15 doubles and 78 RBI.
South Gibson also had two players honored in juniors Aly Walker (centerfield) and Kaitlyn Martin (pitcher).
Walker, The Jackson Sun’s 2015 Softball Hitter of the Year, batted .517 with 10 doubles, three triples and eight home runs to go along with 26 RBI and 39 runs scored. Martin was 16-8 with 174 strikeouts and a 2.84 ERA, while batting .444 with 27 RBI and 37 runs scored.
The final three players honored came from Class A, and all three played on different teams.
Junior Gabby Morris (pitcher/centerfield) helped lead Adamsville to the top four in Class A to head the list.
Morris, The Jackson Sun’s 2015 Softball Pitcher of the Year, went 12-6 this season with 222 strikeouts and a 1.48 ERA. She also batted .474 with 18 doubles, 22 RBI and 27 runs scored.
Gibson County junior Chay Poynor (catcher) and Huntingdon sophomore Cheyenne Childress (third base) were also honored.
Poynor batted .519 this season with 25 RBI, 10 doubles and four home runs. Childress batted .527 with 15 doubles, 30 RBI and 40 runs scored.
