CROSS PLAINS – The East Robertson High School football team’s first practice in pads was canceled Monday morning because the players were showing a lack of commitment, first-year head coach Chad Broadrick said.

“We canceled practice this morning and I told the team that we’re not going to take the field until they can show me they are ready to work,” Broadrick said. “Right now, I’m looking for someone, anyone, to step up and lead this team and that’s not happening right now.”

Broadrick said the players will have to raise their “level of commitment” before they take the field.

“I’m not sure if that’s going to happen tonight, or if it will be tomorrow, but we’re not going to just do things halfway,” he said. “I want to see a commitment out of every player and right now I’m just not seeing that.”

The team has regressed over the past few days, Broadrick said.

“This is hard because we’ve had some good practices leading up to last Thursday,” Broadrick said. “We had two bad days to end last week and today wasn’t looking any better.

“You can’t have the same people not show up, or show up when they get good and ready. It’s hard when you’re missing just one player when you have a team that has about 40 players total, but when you’re missing five or 10 then those players are controlling what we’re able to do with the entire team.”

The Indians are scheduled to take the field again today at 5 p.m., but whether that practice happens is up to his players according to Broadrick.

“We’re scheduled to be back out here from 5-7 p.m. today, but we’ll see what happens then,” Broadrick said. “From this point on, what happens is up to them.”
