Dickson County edged out a 21-15 win at county rival Creek Wood on Friday to open the season.

Freshman Darian Burns fueled the offensive machine for the Cougars with 115 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Sophomore Ethan Griffin led Creek Wood with 76 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

“I think we came out a little passive the first half,” Dickson County coach Troy Williams said. “The first half they got whipped, but in the second half they came out and controlled it. We were behind and had to do some things, but I was very proud of how the line stepped up …We started hitting them. We started moving the ball and then you can see what Darian did.”

It was Creek Wood which scrambled onto the scoreboard first with Griffin scoring on a 30-yard run with just a minute left in the first quarter.

Dickson County’s second effort in the second half started with Collier Wolcott scoring on a 7-yard run in the third quarter. The Red Hawks kept battling though and Griffin again found a gap to run and scored on a 9-yard run to push the lead to 15-6.

Tez Colman fired back for Dickson County with a 9-yard TD run in the fourth quarter, and then Burns put it away with his 17-yard run with less than a minute left.

“I was just trying to find a hole but I’ve got to make one if I can’t find one,” Burns said.
