Jo Byrns wins 18th straight over rival

The rivalry between the East Robertson and Jo Byrns football teams goes back as long as anyone can remember.

Unfortunately, it’s also hard for anyone to remember the last win the Indians had a win over the Red Devils, and Jo Byrns kept that string alive, making it 18 wins in a row over East Robertson after the 41-0 victory Friday night.

“We were able to get the win tonight, but they came out with a lot of energy and we were flat,” Jo Byrns coach Tom Adkins said. “It took us a series to get going, but luckily we hit some big plays and some things bounced our way and we came out on top.”

Senior Parker Baxley, who scored the first three touchdowns of the game, said it was important to jump out on the Indians Friday night.

“In any game, but especially a rivalry like this one, it’s always important to put the first points on the board,” Baxley said. “Getting those points tonight was huge, but we also wanted to preserve the shutout, this was a big win for us.”

Baxley had scores of 42 yards and 4 yards in the first quarter, and then added a 9-yard run in the second to give the Red Devils a 21-0 lead.

Eric Herring scored from 8 yards out just before the halftime break to give Jo Byrns a 27-0 advantage.

Mikey Chennault, who led the team in rushing with 102 yards on six carries, scored the next touchdown from 11 yards out, and Sammy Earheart added the final score from 4 yards out.

“We just played a team that is better than we are right now,” East Robertson coach Chad Broadrick said. “They’re better coached, more disciplined and very balanced, so they are going to be a team that will probably be in contention later in the season.

“We’ll get there if we keep working hard, but we have a long way to go.”
