FAIRVIEW – Creek Wood edged out a 17-14 win on the road at Fairview in non-region action Friday.

Quinton Poole’s 39-yard reception followed by his 21-yard touchdown run helped lock in the win for Creek Wood (1-1) in the fourth quarter.

Fairview (0-2) grabbed the momentum early with Jake Beathard recovering a fumble and then taking the ball in on a 17-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. A couple minutes later, the Yellowjackets recovered another fumble to set up another Beathard scoring run and a 14-0 lead.

“I told them to believe that we were going to win the game. I didn’t doubt them. I didn’t want them to doubt themselves,” Creek Wood head coach Justin Palmer said.

It’s his first win as the Red Hawks new coach.

“I told them after the first quarter, the good thing is it’s just 14-0 and we have three quarters to play, and I felt like we were going to be able to win the game and getting a field goal (Coulter Dotson) before halftime was big,” he said.

Dotson’s 23-yard field goal made it 14-3 at halftime and the Red Hawks carried that momentum into the third quarter. Ethan Griffin capped a strong offensive series with a 15-yard touchdown run. Dotson’s extra point made it a 4-point game.

Beathard and Hunter Caldwell continued to earn big runs for Fairview, but penalties kept the team in a hole. Jeff Perez would miss a 26-yard field goal in the closing minutes of the game.

Poole’s scoring run early in the fourth quarter, along with a recharged Creek Wood defense, helped the Red Hawks hold on for the win.
