Rossview coach Ron Lambert wondered why his team wasn’t getting as much attention during the offseason.

But after senior quarterback Jordan Justice guided the Hawks to a 48-46 victory at Beech on Friday evening, that might change.

Justice completed 23 of 32 passes for 344 yards and six touchdowns for the Hawks (2-0).

“It’s unreal,” Justice said. “It was a total team effort tonight.”

But it was a two-point conversion stop on Beech senior tailback Rodrick Napper that provided the margin of victory. Napper scored from 4 yards out with 1:55 left, his fifth touchdown of the evening, but was tackled in the backfield on the conversion attempt that would have tied the game.

“We were three yards short,” Beech coach Anthony Crabtree said. “We had a chance there, but we just couldn’t get it when we needed it.”

The Hawks gained 464 yards of total offense.

“We didn’t quit and these kids played to the end,” Lambert said. “We feel like we haven’t gotten any respect. Nobody’s talking about us and that’s the way we like it.”

Beech sophomore quarterback Nelson Smith threw for 204 yards and a touchdown, and senior wide receiver Ian Hafner had five receptions for 170 yards.

Beech (1-1) will host Glencliff next week, while Rossview wiil host Brentwood.

Beech retired Tennessee sophomore running back Jalen Hurd’s jersey at halftime of the game.
