Senior Darius Morehead ran for three touchdowns and 115 yards as Ensworth defeated three-time Class 3A champion Madison Academy 28-7 Friday night at Bill Washington Stadium.

Nicky Clifton led the Tigers’ ground attack with 117 yards on 11 carries. Morehead had touchdown runs of 3, 1 and 5 yards as the visitors from Nashville raced to a 28-0 halftime lead. Ensworth (1-1) intercepted Madison Academy quarterback Grayson Edgemon three times, including a 38-yard return for a touchdown by junior Rodney Owens in the second quarter.

Ensworth scored twice in a span of 25 seconds early in the second quarter as Morehead had a 1-yard run to cap a 10-play drive and Owens picked off a Mustang pass and returned it for a touchdown. Morehead later added a 5-yard touchdown run to extend the Tigers’ lead to 28-0 with five minutes left in the first half.

“We really didn’t know what to expect from Madison Academy,” said Ensworth coach Ricky Bowers. “We knew 32 (Auburn recruit Malik Miller) was a really good player. I knew they were a winning program and when you play a winning program, you expect a different level of effort, which is what we got in the second half. Most teams, when they’re getting beat 28-0 in the second half, they’re ready to move on, but Madison Academy didn’t.”

The Mustangs (1-1) finally got on the scoreboard with 7:07 left in the third quarter on Edgemon’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Jaelin Ferdinand.

Miller was limited to 58 yards on 19 carries before leaving the game with a minor injury late in the fourth quarter. Clay Close picked off Edgemon twice to lead the Tigers’ stout defense, which limited the Mustangs to 187 total yards.
