H.S. FOOTBALL: Bolivar comes back to beat Gibson Co.

The Jackson Sun

DYER – Bolivar High’s football team is finding its identity two weeks into the season. Head coach Woodrow Lowe said it’s not being a team that will keep a game close for two or three quarters before taking over late, although that’s how the Tigers won at Gibson County, 49-31.

“I think their identity is just playing with toughness and grit and always fighting until they take over,” Lowe said. “And when they do, then they clamp down and let nothing happen positive for the other team.”

That happened Friday as the Pioneers, who scored 31 points in the first three quarters, were held scoreless in the fourth while Bolivar finished the game outscoring the Pioneers 28-0.

“We made some adjustments defensively, and we put a little more pressure on their quarterback,” Lowe said. “Their QB is a good player, and Gibson County is a better team than they were last year.

“They’ll be tough in their district this year.”

Dreke Lewis had a quality night running the ball for the Tigers, while quarterback Trey Lowe had a pair of touchdown passes.

Peabody 46, Middleton 16: The Golden Tide overcame early penalty problems to score 40 points in the first half to start the third quarter with a mercy rule running clock.

Middleton came back in the third quarter with 16 points to stop that clock, and the Tigers stayed within the 35 points to make sure that happened no more.

Jasper Albea was Peabody’s leading rusher, gaining more than 100 yards and scoring a pair of touchdowns.

Middleton’s 16 points came on two touchdowns, which were two long passes by quarterback Keon Pipkin. He connected with Jonathan Howser for a 78-yard score then threw to Trae Anderson for a 67-yard score.

McKenzie 45, West Carroll 6: The Rebels made sure this year’s game with the War Eagles wasn’t close like it was in 2014.

The Rebels’ rushing game worked well this week, as the team gained 233 yards on 42 carries.

Eric Robinson had 170 of those yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Jack Surber passed for 153.

Wayne County 28, Scotts Hill 27: The Lions nearly pulled off an upset on the road but came up short in Waynesboro.

Bruceton 36, South Fulton 30: The Tigers jumped out to a big lead early after recovering a pair of onside kicks, and they held on as the Red Devils mounted a comeback in the second half.

South Gibson 37, Obion County 20: The Hornets ran away to a win to stay unbeaten before playing their first region game next week.

South Gibson has matched its win total from last year already.

Greenfield 62, Tipton-Rosemark 35: The Yellowjackets are 2-0 after beating the Rebels.

Dresden 62, Gleason 8: The Bulldogs scored late to avoid the shutout in their Region 7-1A opener.

Fayette Academy 42, West Memphis Christian (Ark.) 6: The Vikings are off to a 2-0 start with convincing wins over inferior competition so far.

Fayette Academy scored a touchdown in the first quarter then added a pair of touchdowns in each of the following two quarters to jump out to the big lead.
