Mustangs win battle of unbeatens

HUNTINGDON — Huntingdon and Houston County were both ranked in the top ten of this week’s Class A state rankings when they met on Friday night, but the Mustangs did not worry about rankings, crushing the Fighting Irish 55-14.

“We really are focused on one game at a time,” said Huntingdon head coach Eric Swenson. “We didn’t care who we were playing against, we needed to just come out and take care of business.”

Huntingdon took care of business on both sides of the ball in the first half, allowing the varsity starters to sit in the second half. The Mustangs scored touchdowns on all seven of their possessions in the first half and had 379 yards of offense in the first half as compared to only 43 for the Fighting Irish.

The Mustangs wasted no time in getting on the board, scoring first on a 56-yard touchdown run from Dylan Johnson.

Johnson scored his second touchdown on the Mustangs’ next possession, this time a 14-yard run to make the score 14-0 with 5:01 left in the first quarter.

Huntingdon scored one more time before the end of the quarter, this time on a 31-yard touchdown run by Zach Dodson to make it 20-0 after a missed extra point.

The second quarter was no different than the first, except Dylan Johnson scoring this time on the receiving end of a pass from Kade Pearson from 34 yards out to make it 34-0 with 9:03 left in the half.

After throwing a touchdown pass earlier, it was Pearson who took it himself this time 51-yards to extend the lead even more. The Mustangs went into the locker room with a 49-0 lead at halftime.

With a running clock in the second half, both teams had only two possessions in the second half.
