Oakland’s Lazarius Patterson (4) scored four touchdowns in the Patriots’ 49-6 win Friday night.

MURFREESBORO — Lazarius Patterson wasn’t fazed by a muddy field and steady rain Friday night at Ray Hughes Stadium.

The Oakland junior rushed for 89 yards and scored four touchdowns as the second-ranked Patriots routed Haywood 49-6.

“The line blocked great tonight, especially with the ground being so wet,” said Patterson, who doubled his season touchdown total. “It feels really good to do this, but it will feel better if I can do it against Riverdale.”

The Patriots play their crosstown rival next week in the Battle of the ‘Boro.

Oakland (6-1) dominated the Tomcats (4-3), who were added to the Patriots’ schedule just prior to the regular season so both could play a 10-game slate. Oakland held Haywood to just 64 total yards. The Tomcats had five first downs.

“They are tough; they made everything tough,” Haywood coach Steve Hookfin said. “They are the No. 2 team in 6A for a reason. They’ve got one loss to a pretty good team (Hoover, Ala.) for a reason. We knew we had our hands full coming in.”
