PLAYER OF WEEK: Peabody’s Brandon Johnson

Brandon Johnson didn’t get the ball as many times as he usually does this week.

In fact, the Peabody Golden Tide senior running back had 11 carries before Peabody was up big on Region 7-1A rival Lake County.

But just because he didn’t get that many carries doesn’t necessarily mean he wasn’t that effective.

Johnson came close to averaging a touchdown every other carry with five touchdowns on 11 carries.

Peabody head coach Shane Jacobs said Johnson has been a very dependable player who’s come through in the clutch when the team needed him.

“Starting with that Union City game, he’s really been on a roll for the last few weeks,” Jacobs said. “If he can keep running like that I like our chances to remain competitive and maybe even win some big games.”

Johnson’s strength is his ability to continue to try to get yards with his second effort. Each play is designed for him to go in a certain direction. When he takes the ball and it’s time to move in a specific direction, there may not be a hole there to run through, and he’s OK with that because he can improvise.

There have been a number of times in 2015 when he’ll go up the middle and find nowhere to run, then he’ll quickly take a step back and continue running in another direction where the opposing diferent isn’t. He usually gets big yards like that.

Other standouts this week

Deshawn Brown, Camden: Rushed 18 times for 161 yards and three touchdowns.

Tylon Walker and Chase Boudroux, Adamsville: The pair came off the bench to help Adamsville extend its lead to even further late in the game. Each one scored at least one touchdown as well.
