South Pittsburg moved into the driver’s seat of Region 3-A with a 42-14 home victory against Whitwell.
The teams met in a extremely rare day game Sunday afternoon at Beene Stadium, where Friday’s scheduled game was postponed due to sideline flooding from torrential rains at game time.
The host Pirates overcame a 14-13 halftime deficit to improve to 5-2 overall, 3-0 in the region.
Whitwell falls to 3-4 overall.
South Pittsburg hosts Lookout Valley on Friday, while Whitwell hosts Sale Creek.
The team fought tooth-and-nail in the first half, but South Pittsburg scored 29 unanswered points in the second half to seal the win.
Game highlights included a 47-yard South Pittsburg touchdown pass from Hogan Holloway to Lajuan Ford and a 30-yard touchdown run by Whitwell’s Jake Sartin.
