Dirty Dozen: Top four girls teams remain the same

Now the Hall of Champions games have come to a close and the first week of the season is over, one thing is for sure, the top teams in West Tennessee stayed unbeaten.

Part of that is the fact the girls’ teams have had their players at practice from the start and didn’t have to deal with football.

But the fact of the matter is there are some good basketball teams across West Tennessee.

So here is the new girls’ basketball Dirty Dozen with two new teams in the rankings (Huntingdon and South Gibson):

1South Side (14-AA) (3-0) – The Lady Hawks had two dominating performances this past week, but they were tested by Dyersburg on Saturday. Results: Beat Madison, Dyersburg, North Side. Last week: No. 1.

2Westview (13-AA) (3-0) – The Lady Chargers started the season with three wins, and now the team prepares to play twice this weekend in the Westview Thanksgiving Classic. Results: Beat Trenton Peabody, South Fulton, Bolivar. Last week: No. 2.

3Gibson County (14-A) (4-0) – The Lady Pioneers played three quality opponents this past week, and they came away with four straight wins to start the season. Results: Beat Dresden, Liberty, Chester County, Lake County. Last week: No. 3.

4Middleton (15-A) (3-0) – The Lady Tigers are on a 39-game winning streak after beating three Class AA teams to start the season. Results: Beat Haywood, North Side, Fayette-Ware. Last week: No. 4.

5USJ (D2-A) (3-0) – The Lady Bruins played three quality teams from across West Tennessee to start the season, and they picked up three straight wins. Results: Beat Munford, Bradford, Crockett County. Last week: No. 6.

6Lexington (14-AA) (2-0) – The Lady Tigers picked up two wins to open the season, but now they must be ready to take on No. 2-ranked Westview on Saturday. Results: Beat Liberty, Riverside. Last week: No. 8.

7Bradford (14-A) (3-1) – The Lady Red Devils won two of the first three games of the season, including a 20-point win to open the District 14-A schedule over Union City. Results: Beat Madison, Gleason, Union City; Lost to USJ. Last week: No. 7.

8Dresden (13-A) (1-1) – The Lady Lions split a pair of Hall of Champions games to start the season, but the loss came against No. 1-ranked Gibson County. Results: Beat Halls; Lost to Gibson County. Last week: No. 9.

9Huntingdon (2-0) – The Fillies are off to a 2-0 start after beating two good teams to open the season. Huntingdon has one game this coming week, and it is a rematch with Jackson Christian. Results: Beat Jackson Christian, Camden. Last week: Not ranked.

10South Gibson (2-1) – The Lady Hornets won two of three games to start the season, and the loss was by two points to a quality Peabody team. Beat TCA, Jackson Christian; Lost to Peabody. Last week: No. 10.

11TCA (15-A) (3-1) – The Lady Lions started out with three wins, but they suffered their first loss on Tuesday against an improving South Gibson team. Results: Beat Crockett County, West Carroll, McNairy Central; Lost to South Gibson. Last week: No. 12.

12Haywood (15-AA) (0-2) – The Lady Tomcats didn’t fare well in the opening week of the season, but the losses were against the defending Class A state champion and a perennial Class AAA team from Memphis. Results: Lost to Middleton, Memphis Central. Last week: No. 5.

Dropped out: Camden (1-2); Liberty (2-0)

Teams eligible for the Dirty Dozen rankings are those who represent schools from The Jackson Sun’s 13-county circulation area: Madison, Gibson, Henderson, Chester, Hardeman, Haywood, Crockett, Weakley, Carroll, Benton, Decatur, McNairy and Hardin.
