What Independence didn’t do to Franklin, the Rebels did to themselves Thursday night as the Eagles locked up at least a share of the District 11-AAA regular season title with a 70-50 victory in Thompson's Station.

Indy opened with a blistering run, 22-10 in the first eight minutes, as Pierre Watkins scored eight of his game high 16 points on perfect shooting. The Eagles stretched that lead to 22, 38-16, by the end of the half on a smothering defense that challenged every shot. A near perfect third quarter of shooting (9-11, 3-4 from behind the arc), put Independence up 61-30.

At the same time, the Rebels were committing nine first quarter turnovers (19 for the game) and shooting barely 40 percent from the floor.

Watkins, who hit four three’s in the contest on perfect shooting, got all his points in the first three periods. The Murphy brothers, Grayson (11 points) and Patrick (10 points) combined for 21 on the night.

Reece Glover came off the bench to drop in 12 markers to lead Franklin; Evan Sigler added 10.
