DIRTY DOZEN: Peabody girls re-enter rankings

That special time of the high school basketball season is finally here. The postseason will be here this weekend, and teams will quickly begin to be eliminated.

Most of the No. 1 seeds are known with Dresden (13-A), Gibson County (14-A), Westview (13-AA), South Side (14-AA) and USJ (D2-A) already earning those spots.

The 15-A and 15-AA races are the only one yet to be determined.

One team that isn’t a No. 1 seed but has made a quick run up the standings is Trenton Peabody. The Lady Tide were in the No. 5 spot at Christmas, and now they could possibly tie for second place.

Here is the final Dirty Dozen of the regular season before tournaments begin:

1Gibson County (14-A) (28-0) – The Lady Pioneers finished the regular season unbeaten and as the No. 1 seed in 14-A. Results: Beat South Fulton, Humboldt, Bradford. Last week: No. 1.

2Middleton (15-A) (24-0) – The Lady Tigers have now won 59 straight games with three district wins this past week. Results: Beat Adamsville, TCA, Scotts Hill. Last week: No. 2.

3USJ (D2-A) (25-1) – The Lady Bruins are guaranteed a No. 1 seed in the region tournament with one game left to play. Results: Beat Rossville Christian, Sacred Heart, St. George’s. Last week: No. 3.

4Westview (13-AA) (23-2) – The Lady Chargers have lost four games since Christmas break 2014, and they are the No. 1 seed in 13-AA. Results: Beat South Gibson, Dyersburg. Last week: No. 4.

5Dresden (13-A) (21-3) – The Lady Lions picked up two more district wins and will be the No. 1 seed in the 13-A tournament. Results: Beat Clarksburg, McKenzie. Last week: No. 5.

6Haywood (15-AA) (21-4) – The Lady Tomcats are unbeaten in 15-AA play with a trip to Covington coming up Friday. Results: Beat North Side, JCM. Last week: No. 6.

7Huntingdon (13-A) (18-3) – The Fillies will be the No. 2 seed in the 13-A tournament after finishing off the sweep of Gleason. Results: Beat Gleason, Humboldt. Last week: No. 8.

8South Side (14-AA) (17-7) – The Lady Hawks have earned the No. 1 seed in the 14-AA tournament with three district wins. Results: Beat Chester County, Fayette-Ware, McNairy Central. Last week: No. 9.

9South Gibson (13-AA) (18-6) – The Lady Hornets did suffer a second 13-AA loss, but they have secured the No. 2 seed in the tournament also. Results: Beat Crockett County, Dyersburg; Lost to Westview. Last week: No. 7.

10Lexington (14-AA) (20-4) – The Lady Tigers can earn the No. 2 seed in 14-AA with a win over Chester County on Friday. Results: Beat McNairy Central, Bolivar, Chester County. Last week: No. 11.

11Peabody (14-A) (19-8) – The Lady Tide will finish as the No. 3 seed in the 14-A tournament after winning their last six games. Beat South Fulton, McKenzie, Halls. Last week: Not ranked.

12Gleason (13-A) (19-10) – The Lady Bulldogs split two 13-A games and will be the No. 3 seed going into the 13-A tournament. Results: Beat Bruceton, South Fulton; Lost to Huntingdon. Last week: No. 12.

Dropped out: Chester County (17-10).

Teams eligible for the Dirty Dozen rankings are those who represent schools from The Jackson Sun’s 13-county circulation area: Madison, Gibson, Henderson, Chester, Hardeman, Haywood, Crockett, Weakley, Carroll, Benton, Decatur, McNairy and Hardin.
