Westmoreland squads fall in regular-season finales

ASHLAND CITY The Westmoreland High School boys basketball team suffered a 64-49 loss at Cheatham County on Monday evening in a game that determined the District 9-AA regular-season champion.

The Eagles handed the visiting Cubs their only district setback on Dec. 8, a 51-50 contest.

On Monday, Cheatham County outscored the visitors by a 25-9 margin in the second stanza, turning a 17-14 deficit into a 39-26 lead by halftime.

The Cubs held a 58-39 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Dalton Leath led Westmoreland (17-11, 9-3) with 20 points, followed by Caleb Graves (7 points), Dillon Duffer (6), Henry Hinton (4), Colton Pippin (4), Griffin Garrison (2), Landon Graves (2), Zeke Webb (2) and Matt Whitaker (2).

Cheatham County senior forward Austin Douglas scored a game-high 24 points.

The loss ended a seven-game winning streak for the Eagles.

>> The Westmoreland girls produced just nine points in the second half, leading to a 46-38 loss to the Lady Cubs.

The Lady Eagles won the two teams’ earlier meeting by a 43-37 score.

On Monday, Westmoreland (23-4, 9-3) led 14-9 after one period of play and 29-26 at halftime.

However, the Lady Eagles trailed 36-34 entering the fourth quarter, producing just three field goals in the second half.

Westmoreland seniors Haley Braswell and Jesica Eppstein scored nine and eight points, respectively, backed by Peightyn Gross (6), Kaitlyn Norman (6), Karley Smith (5) and Gracie Oliver (4).

Cheatham County senior forward Josie Bumpus and sophomore center Tiffany Smith scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The win boosted the Lady Cubs into second place, while dropping the Lady Eagles to third.
