White House girls basketball team can't keep up with second-seeded Cheatham County

WHITE HOUSE The seventh-seeded White House High School girls basketball team ended its season with a 70-30 loss to No. 2 seed Cheatham County in a District 9-AA Tournament quarterfinal game played on Wednesday evening at White House Heritage High School.

The Lady Devils suffered losses of 62-32 and 70-38 to the Lady Cubs during the regular season.

On Wednesday, White House (3-21) trailed by just two points following a layin from senior point guard Alyssa Armstrong with 2:49 remaining in the first quarter, but Cheatham County (18-7) responded by scoring the next nine points.

In fact, the Lady Devils didn’t make a field-goal attempt for the remainder of the first half, though they did make six free-throw attempts in the second stanza.

The Lady Cubs led by 19 points at halftime and then scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to create a 45-16 score.

The lead swelled to as much as 41 points by the end of the third period, placing the mercy rule (resulting in a continuously-running clock) into effect.

Cheatham County freshman guard Abbi Douglas scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the third quarter, and junior teammate Josie Bumpus scored all 11 of her points in the first half.

Sophomore guard McKenzie Vaughn led White House offensively with 15 points.

The Lady Devils lost their final 12 games, and the program loses two seniors, Armstrong and Lauren Felts.

The Lady Cubs earned a regional berth with the win and advanced to face the winner of Thursday evening’s quarterfinal game between Greenbrier and Westmoreland in Saturday’s semifinal round.
