Dalton Heath’s shutout helps Knights open with a win

NASHVILLE Senior Dalton Heath tossed a complete-game shutout as the Pope John Paul II High School baseball team captured a 4-0 win at Ensworth on Thursday afternoon.

Knight senior Ryan Hatten singled in junior teammate Jack Shuttleworth in the first inning, and Hatten’s third-inning groundout drove in junior Pace Dempsey, after Shuttleworth and junior Ben Brooks scored thanks to passed balls.Heath (4-1) allowed five hits and struck out eight hitters.

Brooks had three of his team’s 10 hits.

The Knights (15-12 overall, 10-4 in the Division II-Class AA East/Middle Region) scored two runs in the first inning, with Brooks scoring thanks to a throwing error and Shuttleworth crossing the plate on a wild pitch.

Brooks had two of his squad’s seven hits.

However, Ensworth responded with a pair of runs in the fourth inning and the game-winning run in the sixth, which scored thanks to an error.

PJP II junior pitcher Mason Hickman (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing two earned runs on three hits over six innings of work. The Vanderbilt University commitment issued two base on balls and struck out 10 hitters.

Sophomore teammate Matt Steidl tossed a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit while striking out one hitter.

The Knights left baserunners stranded in scoring position in each of the first five innings.

The series finale is slated to be played at PJP II on Saturday afternoon.
