MURFREESBORO — Siegel’s strategy to throw off Dickson County with alternating pitchers did not go in its favor Friday, as the Lady Cougars knocked off the Lady Stars 6-3 to capture their second Class AAA state softball title in three years.

“We made some uncharacteristic mistakes, but give Dickson County all of the credit. They’re a tough team and can hit the ball.” said Siegel coach Perry Lyons.

Dickson County went unbeaten in the tournament and the Lady Cougar seniors finished their careers with four trips to the finals and two state titles.

“That’s enough said,” said Dickson County coach Shane Buchanan.

“They changed this program and have been unreal. They’ve been able to play with great players before them, and before they got here we were starting to turn the corner. They’ve been a great supporting cast.”

It wasn’t a cakewalk on Friday, however. Dickson County fell behind 2-0 early, thanks to a Caitlyn McCrary RBI groundout and a Cede Loftis sacrifice fly. The Lady Stars came at Dickson County with two pitchers, swapping Loftis and Veronica Westfall in and out of the circle during each inning.

“We wanted to mix it up and give them a different speed and different angles,” said Lyons.

The Lady Cougars relied on their experience and were unfazed by the strategy.

“Yesterday we talked and tried to teach them to make adjustments,” said Buchanan.

“We decided that we’re going to have fun. We didn’t tell them much about the two pitchers, but they did what they’re supposed to. They know what to look for and not what to look for. I thought they handled it well.”

Dickson County took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brooklin Lee hit an RBI single that forced an overthrown ball in the outfield that scored two runs to make it 5-3. Katie White hit an RBI single to make it 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth.

Dickson County finished 42-7-1. Siegel ends its best season at 48-8.
