MEMPHIS - Evangelical Christian School scored 14 points in the second quarter during its game against University School of Jackson on Friday.

Fortunately for the Bruins, that was all the points they allowed as USJ scored at least one touchdown in all four quarters for a 35-14 victory.

“It was a good win for us offensively because we had a good game plan that worked based on what we felt like they’d give us in the passing game,” said USJ head coach Rusty Bradley. “Our guys went out and executed it well.”

Quarterback Jacob Buie completed 31 of 44 passes for 438 yards with an interception and five touchdowns.

Wells Smith led the Bruins in receiving with 11 catches for 191 yards and three touchdowns, and Ryan Miller wasn’t far behind him with eight catches for 168 yards and a score. Peyton Taylor caught Buie’s other touchdown pass, the first one of the game.

The Bruins did face some adversity in the second quarter, as they were up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and were set to go in for another score early in the second.

Buie’s pass attempt for the score was intercepted in the end zone and returned for a touchdown.

“Jacob tried to make the tackle on the return and missed, and he was up on our sideline getting coached up to fix the mistake before that play was done,” Bradley said. “And he went out and made the corrections.”

ECS then scored on its next drive to tie the game.

“We huddled up and said we’re not flinching and we’re just going to go back out there and be us,” Bradley said. “We got a score right before the half and scored again early in the third quarter.”
