Reed helps Haywood score points

Haywood’s off to its best start in 12 years with a 5-0 record and scoring a lot of points each week on the field.

One of the big reasons for that is running back Decourtney Reed.

Reed is a sophomore running back who’s emerged as a bruising running back that’s been difficult for opposing defenses to stop.

In a game where the Tomcats needed Reed to be effective because of using the second-string quarterback, Reed answered the call.

He carried the ball 10 times for 114 yards and three scores in the first half of a rout of Crockett County for homecoming.

“Decourtney had a good enough offseason for us to give him a chance to show us what he could do when the season started,” said Haywood head coach Steve Hookfin during an interview earlier in the season. “It’s been a good decision for us so far because he’s answered the call in a big way.”

Here are a couple other running backs who made the area’s high school Fantasy Team of the Week:

Kobe Rogers, Scotts Hill: The running back continues to put up quality numbers as he rushed 25 times for 205 yards and four touchdowns against Jackson Christian. He also caught five passes for 55 yards.

Dylan Johnson, Huntingdon: The Mustangs won big, and Johnson was probably the biggest reason why. He carried the ball 15 times for 211 yards and three scores.

Quarterbacks

Drake Smith, Riverside: He completed 12 of 17 passes for three touchdowns and 281 yards with an interception. He also had 23 carries for 131 yards and another score.

Jacob Buie, University School of Jackson: Completed 31 of 44 passes for five scores and 438 yards and an interception.

Receivers

Wells Smith, USJ: Caught 11 passes and gained 191 yards and getting three scores in a road win.

Rodney Castille, Liberty: Was a bright spot for the Crusaders in a loss with 16 catches for 190 yards and a score.

Kyle Roach, Riverside: Helped the Panthers in a road win with five catches for 204 yards and three touchdowns.

Special teams

Zach Warren, Camden: Went 2-for-2 in PATs in a 20-12 victory for the Lions in which every point mattered.

Luke Lawler, Lexington: Went 5-for-5 in PATs for the Tigers, most notably in overtime when his game-winning kick barely made it inside the left upright.

Defense

Keeton Bailey, Huntingdon: Returned an interception 48 yards late in the Mustangs’ win at McKenzie to give his team a little more insurance on the scoreboard.
