St. Andrew's-Sewanee's Powell wins Division II-A golf

Being a four-time state qualifier calmed such tension entering the week.

Powell, a St. Andrew’s-Sewanee senior, won her first Division II-A girls golf title after shooting even-par 72 on the final day of the two-day tournament at WillowBrook Golf Club.

“It’s great,” said Powell, who was the Division II-A runner-up last year. “I felt great through the entire round. It’s just great to go out this way.”

Powell won with a two-day total of four-over par 148 for 36 holes. St. George’s Victoria England — the first-day leader — was second with a 152.

Powell qualified for the Division I Class AAA state tournament her freshman and sophomore years while at Warren County.

St. Mary’s won the DII-A girls with a 317 score and Franklin Road Academy was second with 320. FRA also finished runner-up in the boys tournament. St. George’s won the boys tournament with 624, 12 shots better than FRA.

FRA’s Josh Holtschlag finished second in DII-A boys, shooting 1-over par 145 for the tournament. He was five strokes behind state champion St. George’s Winston Margaritis.

In DII-AA boys, Brentwood Academy’s Alex Cobb and Father Ryan’s Nick Wolf tied for sixth after finishing at 146. Cobb shot 73 on Tuesday, Wolf 75.

Memphis University School’s Goodman Rudolph won the DII-AA boys title with a 3-under (141).

St. Agnes freshman Rachel Heck set a state record with a 10-under par 134 for her two-day total in DII-AA girls. She beat her sister Abby Heck by 15 strokes.

Ensworth’s Caroline Frist and Father Ryan’s Aubrey Frantz tied for third at 155. Frist shot 74 on Tuesday while Frantz shot 79.

St. Agnes (283) won the DII-AA girls title. Ensworth (315) finished second.
