Midstate football Top 10: Small schools

A look at the top small high school football teams in Middle Tennessee, as ranked by the USA Today Sports network. Small schools consist of teams from Class 1A, Class 2A, Class 3A and Division II-A.

1. Stratford (9-0): The Spartans will finish the regular season unbeaten for the first time since 1992 with a win over Greenbrier on Friday. Last week: 1. This week: Friday vs. Greenbrier.

2. Fairview (9-0): The Yellow Jackets, who haven’t completed an unbeaten regular season since 1990, need a win over Harpeth on Friday to win the Region 6-3A title. Last week: 2. This week: Friday vs. Harpeth. 

3. Waverly (8-1): The Tigers clinched the Region 5-2A championship with a 40-0 rout of a six-win Scotts Hill squad Oct. 14. Last week: 3. This week: Friday at Decatur County-Riverside.

4. Forrest (9-0): The Rockets, who have scored at least 35 points in each of their past five games, are seeking the program’s first unblemished regular season since 1980. Last week: 4. This week: Friday at Jackson County.

5. Watertown (8-1): The Purple Tigers have scored 40 points or more in all of their wins this season, erupting for 62 points in Friday’s rout of Community. Last week: 5. This week: Friday at Westmoreland.

6. Nashville Christian (7-2): It took a fourth-quarter touchdown for the Eagles to remain unbeaten in Region 5-1A with Friday’s 20-17 win over Middle Tennessee Christian. Last week: 7. This week: Friday vs. Trousdale County.

7. Wayne County (9-0): The Wildcats won their second consecutive Region 6-1A title with a win over Huntingdon and now have a chance at back-to-back undefeated regular seasons. Last week: 8. This week: Friday vs. Collinwood.

8. Goodpasture (7-2): The Cougars’ turnaround continued as they earned a home playoff game with Friday’s win over Christ Presbyterian Academy. Last week: 9. This week: Friday vs. White House-Heritage.

9. Harpeth (8-1): The Indians have reeled off five consecutive victories entering Friday’s Region 6-3A championship game. Last week: NR. This week: Friday at Fairview.

10. Christ Presbyterian Academy (3-6): The Lions struggled to run the football and to slow Goodpasture’s offense in Friday’s three-point loss. Last week: 6. This week: Friday vs. Whites Creek.
