TRENTON – When a player gets hot, her teammates usually know who to feed the ball.

On Thursday, that player was freshman Chloe Moore for the Greenfield girls basketball team.

During a four-minute stretch in the third quarter, Moore hit four straight 3-pointers to send the Lady Yellowjackets to a 55-46 victory over Trenton Peabody on the road.

“Early on, we didn’t play our best basketball,” Greenfield coach Willie Trevathan said. “Peabody does a good job getting up in you and making you make mistakes.”

Greenfield improves to 5-0 with a 3-0 record in District 14-A play in the early season.

Moore finished with a game-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds and three steals.

“My mindset was that my team needed me, and I had to do whatever I could for them,” Moore said. “We got on a roll in the third quarter, and we had to just keep going.”

But the Lady Yellowjackets didn’t have the start that they wanted as Peabody (2-5, 1-1) took a 10-2 lead.

The Lady Tide used their quickness on defense to create turnovers and easy baskets.

The same happened in the second quarter as Peabody jumped back out to a 25-17 lead, but each time Greenfield fought their way back in the game.

With two freshmen in the starting lineup, the Lady Yellowjackets are bound to make mistakes, but they managed to overcome those.

“I thought we had two good stretches in the game, and that was the last two minutes of the second quarter and the third quarter,” Trevathan said. “We played pretty well then, but other than that is was an ugly, sloppy game.”

But the in the third quarter, Greenfield started out better and finished better with the four 3-pointers.

Bentley Gordon and Makayla Little opened the half with back-to-back 3-point plays to give the Lady Yellowjackets a small lead. Little finished with 11 points.

“We made some tough shots in the third quarter, and Bentley and Makayla got us the lead early with those three-point plays,” Trevathan said. “Then of course Chloe made those shots for us.”

Peabody tried to make a rally in the fourth quarter as the Lady Tide cut the 18-point deficit to 11 with 3:10 to go, but they couldn’t cut it to single digits until the final minute.

“Coach Trevathan gives us the positives and the negatives after a game to make sure we stay humble,” Moore said. “We know that we have to keep this up and not be braggers ot think that we are just going to beat a team.”

Rae’vianna Clark led Peabody with 12 points.
