High school notebook: Siegel's Sophia Bossong named freshman all-American

Siegel High volleyball standout Sophia Bossong was recently named to the Max Preps Freshman All-American Team.

Siegel's Sophia Bossong was recently named a freshman all-American.

The 5-10 setter helped lead Siegel to a final four finish in the Class AAA State Volleyball Tournament in 2016. She had 1,208 assists, 47 aces, 55 kills and 187 digs for the Lady Stars.

Bossong is a finalist for The Daily News Journal's All-Area Volleyball Player of the Year (along with senior teammate Leah Poarch and Oakland senior Jessica Paden), being named a first-team member on the 2016 squad.

She was the only player from Tennessee on the Freshman All-American list. South Greene setter Braelyn Wykle was named on the Sophomore All-American team while Brentwood High outside hitter Garrett Joiner and Knoxville Webb's Nicklin Hames were named to the Junior All-American Team.

Pettit named Vols golf assistant: Former Oakland and University of Tennessee golf standout Phillip Pettit has been named an assistant on the Vols men's golf team.

The 2008 UT graduate will work under 19-year veteran head coach Jim Kelson.

Pettit, a 2004 Oakland graduate, most recently played professional golf, competing on the NGA Pro Golf Tour, Web.com Tour and Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada. He was named the 2009 NGA Rookie of the Year.

While at Tennessee Pettit helped the Vols to a pair of NCAA Championship appearances (2005, 2007) and averaged 73.31 (eighth in school history). He was first-team 
All-SEC during his junior year in 2007. He also competed in the 2007 U.S. Open.

Pettit reached the Class AAA State Golf Tournament all four seasons at Oakland, improving on his finish each year. He was 17th during his freshman season, followed by seventh, sixth and a fourth-place finish during his senior season in 2003.

He won the 2002 Tennessee State Junior Tournament and took second at the Tennessee State Amateur in 2003 and seventh in 2004.

Stewarts Creek's Duffee signs with Vol State: Stewarts Creek baseball standout Will Duffee recently signed a scholarship to play at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin.

Duffee helped lead Stewarts Creek to the Class AAA State Baseball Tournament last season. He hurled seven innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out three during Spring Fling.
