Brentwood punter commits to Mississippi State

Brentwood kicker Tucker Day (42) celebrates after kicking the game-winning field goal against Centennial on Nov. 18, 2016. Brentwood won 24-21.

Tucker Day left Starkville, Miss., on Sunday without a scholarship offer.

That changed on the road home.

"I was sitting in the car and letting myself go to sleep," Day said. "I woke about two hours later and saw some texts on the phone from (assistant) coach (Chris) Boniol (and coach Dan Mullen)."

Day, a Brentwood High and U.S. Army All-American punter, committed to Mississippi State, picking the Bulldogs over Army, Colorado State, Illinois, Navy and Rutgers.

Day averaged 39.3 yards per punt this past season with 13 inside the 20.

Day said he had dreamed of playing in the SEC. He thought that dream might never be fulfilled. Day said his official visit went well over the weekend. He connected well with the Mississippi State coaching staff.

Day played football with Mullen's son on the game field. He visited the Mississippi State president's house and later went to Mullen's home and met his family, where he discussed the need for an Italian restaurant in Starkville with Mullen.

Day is the second Nashville area football player to commit to the Bulldogs, joining Independence's Landon Guidry.

Oakland's Kaleb Oliver decommitted from Mississippi State on Monday. He had reopened his recruitment after defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon left the program for the same position at Louisville. Ole Miss offered Oliver over the weekend.

Guidry also reopened his recruitment after Sirmon's departure, but remains committed to Mississippi State.

Tucker said Guidry sent him a message congratulating him on his decision and welcomed him to the Mississippi State family.
