THOMPSON’S STATION — Summit managed to remain unbeaten in district play on Tuesday, coming from behind to secure a 76-71 overtime win at rival Independence.

Summit's John Carter dribbles down the lane during Tuesday's District 11-AAA matchup at Independence.

Led by senior Navy signee John Carter, the fifth-ranked Spartans overcame a 31-21 halftime deficit before eventually forcing overtime and securing their fifth District 11-AAA win this season.

"We just knew we had the ability to do it," Carter said of the come-from-behind victory. "We've been preaching mental toughness. We knew we weren't getting the calls early, but we knew we'd get them later. It all came full circle in the end. It shows how tough we are to get that win."

Carter, who shot 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, scored 19 of his season-high 30 points in the second half and overtime period, while his little brother, Tai Carter, added 16 points for Summit (15-2, 5-0 in 11-AAA), which is No. 2 in this week's Tennessean Midstate Top 10.

Senior Belmont signee Grayson Murphy tallied a game-high 34 points to lead Independence (11-6, 3-2), which has now dropped three in a row, while teammates Greg Miller, Jeremiah Barr and Corbin Daugherty each added seven.

"This was two rivals just going at it," Independence coach Greg Glass said. "We had a 10-point lead at half and we knew they weren't going to lay down. We had our opportunities. We've just got to get refocused and ready for Brentwood."
