MEDINA - The South Gibson County Lady Hornets got off to a slow start against Crockett County in District 13-AA play on Tuesday night. Throughout much of the first quarter, the Hornets missed on scoring opportunities, but that changed in the following quarters. A big second quarter run by the Hornets allowed separation between the teams as the Hornets cruised to a district win, 57-36.

“I thought in the first quarter we left a lot of scoring opportunities out there on the floor,” South Gibson head coach Carla Wyatt said. “In between the first and second quarter, I told our girls that we could not pass up on the scoring chances that we had.

“I felt like we played a lot smarter in the second quarter and throughout the second half.”

The Lady Hornets (13-7, 2-1) scored in a variety of ways throughout the third quarter. SGC senior Sarah Grace Scott led the way as she scored nine of her game-high 22 points in the second quarter.

Fellow senior Christen King also contributed in the effort as she scored six consecutive points midway through the quarter to push the lead to 10 points. Scott followed King’s run with four consecutive free throws. King followed Scott in scoring with 21 points of her own.

The Lady Hornets held the Lady Cavaliers (12-7, 1-2) scoreless for half of the second quarter, allowing them to hold a 30-16 lead headed into the half.

“I thought we played outstanding defense the entire game,” Wyatt said. “Crockett County has a big threat in Elli Pratt. I thought we did a good job of containing her and gave the rest of the team some trouble with our defense.”

Pratt led the Lady Cavaliers in scoring with 11 points.

The third quarter saw both teams play even in scoring as each scored 12 pointsin the quarter.

The Lady Hornets did not let up in the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 21 points with several made free throws down the stretch.

The Lady Hornets have another big matchup on Friday as they travel to Dyersburg.

“District 13-AA is a very tough district,” Wyatt said. “It’s important that we come out focused every night.

“Dyersburg will be a tough game. We have to stay focused and play our game."
