Riverside's McElrath breaks record, other milestones

Riverside's Daryl McElrath broke the program record for points in a game against Middleton.

On a night when Riverside junior Daryl McElrath was being honored for reaching a scoring milestone, McElrath went ahead and decided to break a program record.

Tuesday night, McElrath was honored for scoring his 1,000th point against Trinity Christian Academy on Friday. But as the Panthers played District 15-AA leader Middleton, he broke the program record for points in a game.

McElrath scored 48 points to help lead Riverside to a 76-69 victory over Middleton to force a three-way tie atop the district standings.

Coaching milestone

Hardin County coach Ron Burnham was honored Tuesday night for picking up his 500th victory in girls basketball.

The momentous win came over the Christmas break when the Lady Tigers beat Lake Cormorant (Miss.) in the Peggy Bain Memorial Tournament at Alcorn Central (Miss.).

After Tuesday night's win, Burnham has 502 wins during his tenure at Camden (1982-94) and Hardin County (1995-2016) as a girls basketball coach. He also has 19 wins coaching boys basketball at Big Sandy.

Burnham has led two teams to the state tournament — Camden in 1992 and Hardin County in 1996.

2,000 points

Chester County senior Paige Pipkin became the fourth player this season to reach the 2,000-point mark for her career.

Pipkin, a UTM signee, scored the 2,000th point against South Side on Tuesday, and the milestone point put the Eaglettes up. South Side went on to win the game.

She will be given her 2,000-point ball on Tuesday when Chester County hosts McNairy Central.

The other players this season to pass 2,000 points are USJ's Anna Jones, TCA's Brynne Lytle and Camden's Hunter Vick.

1,000 points

Riverside's McElrath isn't the only local player to pass 1,000 points recently.

Tuesday night, USJ's Brandon Craig scored his 1,000th point on the road at Rossville Christian. Craig went on to score 34 points in the game, but the Bruins lost to the Wolves.

Other players to reach the 1,000-point milestone this season are Crockett County's Elli Pratt, Gibson County's Justyce White, Gleason's Jayden Green, Westview's Lydia Pritchett, Gibson County's Mac Hicks, Gleason's Lucio Solano, Hardin County's Antonio Davis, Middleton's Montrez Jones,

AA Classic

Fayette-Ware will be hosting The AA Classic on Saturday with some of the top boys basketball teams from West Tennessee facing top teams from Middle Tennessee.

There are four games scheduled beginning at 3 p.m.

• Covington will take on Pearl Cohn in the first game.

• Ripley will face 2016 semifinalist Whites Creek at 4:30 p.m.

• South Side will take on Maplewood at 6 p.m.

• Fayette-Ware will face Marshall County in a rematch of last year's state quarterfinal.
