Girls basketball roundup: Central Magnet girls get first 8-AA win

It took overtime, but Central Magnet secured its first District 8-AA victory Friday night with a 52-44 win over DeKalb County.

The teams entered overtime tied at 44, but Central Magnet dominated the extra period, shutting out DeKalb County 8-0.

It was a comeback effort for the Lady Tigers, who trailed 26-19 at halftime.

Maddie Sandman had a huge night for Central Magnet (1-7, 8-12), scoring a game-high 23. Sydney Smith added nine.

Stewarts Creek 66, La Vergne 11: Sixth-ranked Stewarts Creek improved to 6-1 in District 7-AAA play, 17-3 overall with the blowout win.

The Lady Red Hawks did all the damage they needed in the first quarter, racing out to a 31-6 lead on the Lady Wolverines (0-6 in 7-AAA).

After building a 49-9 halftime lead, Stewarts Creek limited La Vergne to one point in each of the final two periods.

Twelve players scored for the Lady Red Hawks, led by Brianah Ferby's 13 points.

MTCS 59, Cascade 37: The middle quarters were kind to the Lady Cougars, who outscored Cascade 16-8 in the second period and 17-7 in the third.

The Lady Cougars improved to 9-9 overall.

Three players scored in double digits for MTCS, led by Abby Buckner's 17. Camden Adams added 13 and Emma Self 11.

Providence Christian 43, Hendersonville Christian 25: Playing without senior guard Emma Christiansen (shoulder), the Lady Lions were still able to pull away from HCA.

PCA led 23-11 at halftime.

Kaici Bivens stepped up in Christiansen's absence, scoring a game-high 16 points, including five 3-pointers. Liza Jane Jones added 11 for the Lady Lions (6-2, 15-2).

Christiansen was expected to be back for Saturday's 4 p.m. league contest against Friendship Christian.
