4 things from White House Heritage's sweep of White House

White House Heritage swept its cross-town rival for the second time this season, with the Patriots beating White House 73-60 and the Lady Pats earning a 66-41 win.

Four takeaways from the games:

Playing without Petrone

Heritage was playing without coach Mike Petrone on the sidelines. Petrone had to leave right before the game to tend to an ill family member.

Heritage alumnus Devin Harper, who graduated in 2010, took the reins.

"I think I'm lucky because I played for coach Petrone and a knew the plays and knew what he liked to do," Harper said.

The Patriots (15-2, 4-1) trailed early, but took a 42-34 lead by halftime and kept holding the visiting Blue Devils at bay. The Blue Devils fell behind by 15 and never got within eight.

"We're finishing shots and getting open looks right now and things are really positive for us right now," Harper said.

Hot early, cold at the line

White House (6-13, 3-4) hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter to take a 21-17 lead at the end of the first quarter, but hit only two the rest of the night and hit only 10 of 23 free-throw attempts.

"We had a drought, and when the drought came, they built the momentum and we spent the rest of the night trying to catch up," White House coach Gary Smith said. "We cut into it some, but we got too far behind."

A season-high

Heritage's 66 points were a season-best for the Lady Patriots. The previous best was 64, and it was eclipsed on a shot at the buzzer.

Alex McFarlin led Heritage with 18 points.

"We had three in doubles and (another) had eight," coach Clay Head said. "We moved the ball well and we got the shots we wanted. Our zone offense is a lot better than it was at the start of the year."

Heritage (14-7, 4-2) was playing the first of three games in a five-day stretch. It visits Harpeth on Monday and hosts Westmoreland on Tuesday.

"I've really tried to give them rest and hopefully prepare for times like this," Head said. "That said, defensively, we didn't have our A-game, and if we're tired, we need to get over that because we've got two big games coming up."

Still fighting

White House (3-14, 0-7) acquitted itself much better than in the first meeting, won 62-20 by Heritage.

The Lady Devils got to within 31-23 to open the second half before Heritage closed third period with a 14-2 run.

"I thought we fought hard all night long. We never gave up," White House coach Jeff Bennett said. "Heritage gives you a chance to get your head down, and I don't think we laid down at all."
