DIRTY DOZEN: Peabody girls back in rankings

Now is the time for teams to start peaking and playing their best basketball of the season.

District tournaments are three weeks away, and of course, every team wants the best seed possible.

Many of the districts across West Tennessee are close and won’t be decided until that final week of the regular season.

One team that is working towards its potential is Trenton Peabody. The Lady Tide beat Gibson County and Dyersburg, who are in battles for a top seed in their district.

So as coaches in the area begin to make sure their teams are executing to perfection, here is the new girls basketball Dirty Dozen:

1. South Side (14-AA) (15-0) – The Lady Hawks picked up two more wins to stay unbeaten on the season. Two big district tests at home loom this week with second-place along with a Lexington team that played them tight last time. Results: Beat Chester County, McNairy Central. Last week: No. 1.

2. USJ (D2-A) (18-2) – The Lady Bruins are yet to be tested in their district. They face three district opponents this week with trips to Tipton-Rosemark and Margolin Hebrew Academy before hosting Fayette Academy. Results: Beat Rossville Christian, St. George’s. Last week: No. 2.

3. Westview (13-AA) (19-2) – The Lady Chargers are still unbeaten in 13-AA play. They have three games this week with the first two coming on the road at TCA and Milan before playing Crockett County at home. Results: Beat Dyersburg, Obion County. Last week: No. 3.

4. Greenfield (14-A) (19-2) – The Lady Yellowjackets beat one of the top five teams in the state in Class A and stayed unbeaten in district play. Greenfield can clinch the No. 1 seed in 14-A on Tuesday with a win over Gibson County. Results: Beat Lake County, Dresden. Last week: No. 6.

5. Dresden (13-A) (16-4) – The Lady Lions made sure to stay unbeaten in district play, but they did take a loss to a county foe. Dresden has three district opponents on the schedule this week with McKenzie, Huntingdon and Bruceton. Results: Beat Gleason, Clarksburg; Lost to Greenfield. Last week: No. 4.

6. Gleason (13-A) (19-4) – The Lady Bulldogs bounced back from a district loss to pick up a district win. Gleason gets to stay at home this week with games against Clarksburg and West Carroll. Results: Beat Huntingdon; Lost to Dresden. Last week: No. 5.

7. Huntingdon (13-A) (12-3) – The Fillies took a second loss on the season to Gleason, and they must get ready for another tough opponent this week as Dresden comes to town along with games against West Carroll and Big Sandy. Results: Beat Bruceton; Lost to Gleason. Last week: No. 7.

8. TCA (15-A) (14-6) – The Lady Lions finished off the season sweep of Middleton, and now they open the week with Westview before playing home games against Madison and Adamsville to close out the week. Results: Beat Jackson Christian, Middleton. Last week: No. 9.

9. Haywood (15-AA) (13-8) – The Lady Tomcats are still undefeated in the second half of the season. Haywood travels to Ripley to finish out the first set of district games before hosting North Side on Friday. Results: Beat Millington, Covington. Last week: No. 12.

10. South Gibson (13-AA) (14-7) – The Lady Hornets are stayed within one game of 13-AA leader Westview. They have two home games this week against Obion County and Milan. Results: Beat Crockett County, Dyersburg. Last week: No. 10.

11. Gibson County (14-A) (15-8) – The Lady Pioneers fell to two games behind district leader Greenfield. Gibson County has a chance to get a game closer as its hosts the Lady Yellowjackets this week before a trip to South Fulton. Results: Beat Lake County, Union City; Lost to Peabody. Last week: No. 8.

12. Peabody (14-A) (13-9) – The Lady Tide are back in the rankings after a roller coaster week. They beat two of the top teams in West Tennessee while taking a loss to an improved Humboldt team. Results: Beat Gibson County, Dyersburg; Lost to Humboldt. Last week: Not ranked.

Teams eligible for the Dirty Dozen rankings are those who represent schools from The Jackson Sun’s 13-county circulation area: Madison, Gibson, Henderson, Chester, Hardeman, Haywood, Crockett, Weakley, Carroll, Benton, Decatur, McNairy and Hardin.
