GREENFIELD — The Greenfield girls basketball team hadn't won a district championship since 1979.

The streak looked like it was going to continue for the first three quarters of the District 14-A championship, but a 17-0 run by Greenfield to start the fourth quarter pushed the Lady Yellowjackets to their first district title in 38 years as they defeated Trenton Peabody 49-45 at Greenfield.

“This was an unbelievable effort by our team tonight,” Greenfield coach Willie Trevathan said. “In the first half, we weren’t doing a good job defensively, and we let Stacie Mayberry get going a little bit. In the second half, we started executing defensively and did a lot better job.

“We finally started hitting some shots there in the fourth quarter, and it just snowballed from there.”

The fourth quarter run was led by Chloe Moore, who came up with several key steals in addition to nine points in the quarter.

“Chloe hit some big shots for us to get us going,” Trevathan said. “The team fed off of that and started diving for some loose balls, getting rebounds, and coming up with big defensive stops.”

Peabody (20-10) jumped out to a 19-13 lead at the end of the first quarter behind Stacie Mayberry’s 10 points.

The Lady Tide pushed their lead up to eight points in the second quarter, but a 3-pointer by Greenfield’s Makayla Little cut the score to 25-20 at the half.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle as Peabody held a 35-29 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Greenfield (25-4) took their first lead of the game with 5:43 left as Chloe Moore knocked down a 3-pointer in the midst of the Greenfield run. Greenfield's lead got to as many as 11 in the quarter, but a comeback attempt by Peabody cut the lead back to four.

Moore led Greenfield in scoring with a game-high 20 points. Tess Darby also finished in double figures with 10 points and was also named the District 14-A Player of the Year.

“This game was a testament to our entire team tonight,” Trevathan said. “We are going to enjoy this one.”
