Creek Wood girls capture fifth straight district title

When Creek Wood coach Sam Young took the Lady Red Hawks head coaching vacancy last year, he knew that he had something special.

A program that had won four district 11-AA championships in a row, Young's team made it five Saturday night with a 56-42 victory against a stingy Lewis County team.

Lewis County brought heavy defensive pressure all night, including holding Creek Wood to only one point in the second quarter.

The Lady Red Hawks, however, battled back. They hung 21 points on Lewis County in the fourth quarter, with most of them coming from the charity strip.

"(That's) two quality teams," said Young.

"(Lewis County) has been ranked in the state all year. We've been fighting for first place with them all year. We told them good teams aren't going to lay down. I thought the girls responded really well, especially after halftime. The girls showed a lot of character tonight."

Three different Lady Red Hawks reached the double-digit mark on the night. Lydia Edmonson had 17 to pace Creek Wood, while Elayna Gass had 14 and Sam Kilian had 12.

Creek Wood will host the fourth-place team from district 12-AA Friday in the regionals.

The Lady Cougars raced to a 19-6 lead after the first quarter and never looked back to capture the 11-AAA championship. Emily Beard had 20 points to lead the way, who will host the district 12-AAA fourth-place team Friday.

The Red Hawks could not come away with a victory against the Yellow Jackets in the 11-AA consolation game that saw it's fair share of lead changes . Creek Wood will now travel to the district 12-AA champion for it's regional game next Saturday.

Coulter Dotson had 20 for Creek Wood.
