Outside shots were the weapon of choice for both Station Camp and visiting Northeast in Saturday’s Region 5-AAA Tournament quarterfinals.

Even though the Bison made more 3-pointers than the Eagles, it was Northeast’s inside game that propelled the Eagles into Tuesday’s semifinals, handing the Bison a 62-50 loss to end their season.

Breakdown of Saturday’s quarterfinal:

Records: Northeast 22-9, Station Camp 20-11

Nuts and bolts: The Bison hit nine 3-pointers compared to Northeast’s eight, but the real damage came from the foul line, where the Eagles hit 12-of-13 free throws to help ice the victory. The Bison made fewer two-point field goals (seven) than from beyond the arc, while Northeast had 12 field goals from 2-point range.

Jaylon Thorpe proved unstoppable, hitting seven 3-pointers and finishing with a game-high 26 points.

The Bison went on a 13-2 run late in the third quarter and into the fourth, with Thomas Zazzaro’s 3-pointer putting Station Camp in front with 6:21 to play.

Turning point: Northeast’s response did the Bison in, putting together a 9-0 run in the next 3:30 to regain control of the game.

Station Camp’s Jaylen Woods shoots a 3-pointer during Saturday’s Region 5-AAA Tournament quarterfinal game against Northeast.

Leading scorers: Northeast: Jaylon Thorpe 26, Alec Kegler 13, Jontae Brown 12. Station Camp: Chase Freeman 14, Jonathan Gillard, Jr. 11, Thomas Zazzaro 9.

Quotable: “We didn’t finish in the paint,” Station Camp head coach Seth Massey said. “In the first half, we missed eight shots in the paint. We just didn’t finish at the rim, and their length had something to do with that.”

“If you know the story of our seniors, I’m their fourth coach in four years,” Northeast head coach John Stigall said. “This year has been a test, and everything that we’ve been through – that little run (in the fourth quarter), they’ve seen it, been there and been around the block. Quinton Cross guarded Freeman all but about 30 seconds of the game and did a great job.”

Next up: Northeast faces Beech at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the semifinals at Lebanon High School. Station Camp is eliminated with the loss.
