TCA girls pull out win over Mitchell in OT
Just when it looked as though the Trinity Christian Lady Lions’ season was slipping away and coming to an end, the girls regained their composure and outscored Mitchell 11-0 in the last two minutes of overtime to win 70-66.
TCA’s (23-8) win puts them in the Region 8-A final on Wednesday night against district rival Middleton (24-6), who defeated Riverside in the first game of the night 58-45 at Jackson Christian.
The Lee sisters - Savannah and Macey – scored seven of the Lady Lions’ 11 points in overtime to help TCA get the win. Freshman Macey finished the game with a team-high 21 points, and senior Savannah finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.
The hero in overtime though may be Tiffany Turner, who drew a charging foul on Mitchell’s Kiara McCollins with 2:02 remaining and TCA trailing 66-59.
McCollins then slammed the ball and received a technical foul. Turner hit the two free throws to break the ice for the Lions.
Then after Macey scored a basket to make it 66-63, Turner took the ball coast to coast and scored again to make it 66-65, and TCA had the momentum again.
TCA had a 48-39 lead to start the fourth period and looked to be ready to put the game on ice, but Mitchell behind guard Derinisha Taylor, who had a game high 32 points, outscored TCA 20-11 to tie the game at 59-59 at the end of four periods.
Middleton 58 Riverside 45: Chelsey Perry and Sequoya Warren led Middleton to a victory over Riverside in the first semifinal game of the night. Perry finished the game with 18 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Warren led all scorers with 20 points, 11 of which came from the free throw line.
Riverside was led by Diedre McElrath with 18 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
