MURFREESBORO — Riverdale's Randy Coffman became the first coach from Tennessee to be named the Naismith High School Girls Coach of the Year on Monday, capping a whirlwind weekend.

Coffman, whose Lady Warriors won their second straight Class AAA state title on Saturday with a 66-59 win over Memphis Central, had his first granddaughter born after the win.

s"If there was a prize that I got, it came after the game," Coffman said. "I spent the night in a hospital."

Coffman said he was out having a celebratory dinner with family and friends Saturday night when his daughter called saying she was headed to the hospital and in labor. Coffman's wife quickly left to join her and Coffman soon joined.

"This coach of the year stuff — I'm not in it for individual accolades," Coffman said. "We try to make it about the girls, the program and the team. But crazy things have happened."

Coffman is the second from Murfreesboro to garner a national girls coach of the year honor.

Trevecca women's basketball coach Chad Hibdon received the All-USA national honor in 2014 and was the coach of the year by the National High School Coaches Association in 2015. He led Blackman to state titles in 2014 and 2015.

Riverdale is currently ranked first by USA Today and MaxPreps.
