High school roundup: Siegel, Riverdale take first two in 7-AAA baseball series

Defending Class AAA state baseball champion Siegel locked up a season-opening series win against Smyrna, taking game 2 of a three-game set, 12-3, Tuesday evening at home.

The Stars (2-0 7-AAA, 2-0 overall) pounded out nine hits and also took advantage of five walks and four Smyrna (0-2, 0-2) errors.

Siegel jumped on the Bulldogs early, scoring five runs in the first and three in the second.

Trey Campbell had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs for Siegel while Zac Pearson had two hits, three runs scored and two RBIs. Drew Benefield was 1-for-1 with two walks, a double and a sacrifice fly.

Carson Simmons battled control issues on the chilly night, allowing just two runs (one earned), walking six and striking out six to earn the win.

Dayton Sanders was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple and three runs scored for Smyrna.

The Stars won a 5-2 road contest over the Bulldogs on Monday as Pearson allowed just one earned run and struck out eight over 4.1 innings.

Ryker Kristinus had two hits and an RBI for Siegel while Benefield doubled, scored a run and had an RBI.

The two teams battle in the third of the series Wednesday at Smyrna at 6 p.m.

Riverdale takes first two from La Vergne: Riverdale jumped out to a 2-0 start in 7-AAA, thanks to Tuesday evening's 9-3 win over host La Vergne.

Lucas Harrell tossed 4.2 innings of relief for the win while Peyton Henderson was 2-for-5 with a triple and RBI for the Warriors.

The Warriors (2-0, 2-0) knocked off the Wolverines (0-2, 0-2) with a 6-2 victory in Monday's contest at Riverdale.

Stewarts Creek tops Blackman: Stewarts Creek started the district slate 1-0 with a 3-0 home win over Blackman Monday. Tuesday's second game of the three-game series was pushed to Wednesday at Blackman while the finale will be played Thursday at Stewarts Creek.

Eagles fall: Eagleville fell to 0-2 overall with Tuesday's 10-6 loss to Trousdale County.

The Eagles dropped a 5-4 decision to Gordonsville on Monday.

Softball

Siegel begins season with win: Siegel's softball team upended La Vergne 10-0 Monday to begin the season.

The defending Class AAA state runners-up had multiple-hit games from Presley Leebrick, Ciera Purvis and Hollee Henson in the victory.

Soccer

Stewarts Creek downs Siegel: Stewarts Creek edged Siegel 2-1 to begin the 7-AAA soccer season Tuesday evening.

The Stars received goals from Robell Habte and Andrew Udulutch while Taylor Buena and Carter Smith both collected assists for the Red Hawks (1-0, 1-0).

Riverdale tops Smyrna: Riverdale started the 7-AAA season with a 2-1 win over Smyrna Tuesday.

Christian Shafer broke a 1-1 tie with a second-half goal for the Warriors (1-0, 1-0). Harrison Psychoularis scored a first-half goal for Riverdale as the two teams were tied at 1-1 at intermission.

Chris Conrado scored the first-half goal for Smyrna (0-1, 0-1) on an assist from David Perez.

Central Magnet starts right: Defending Class A-AA semifinalist Central Magnet began the season with a 4-0 win over host Goodpasture Tuesday.
