Tennessean Midstate basketball Top 10: Boys

The final Tennessean Midstate boys basketball Top 10 of 2016-17, as ranked by the USA TODAY Network of Tennessee.

1. Brentwood Academy (30-2) — The Eagles, led by two-time Mr. Basketball Darius Garland, finished the season with a No. 11 national ranking according to MaxPreps. Last week: No. 1. 

2. Maplewood (29-7) — Two-time Mr. Basketball Bo Hodges and the Panthers on Saturday became the first Metro Nashville boys squad to win a state title in 21 seasons. Last week: No. 4.

3. Independence (24-11) — Independence’s impressive postseason run came to an end with an 83-71 loss to Southwind in Wednesday’s Class AAA semifinals. Last week: No. 3.

4. Whites Creek (29-6) — The Cobras, led by 6-foot-9 senior Ruot Monyyong, reached the Class AA semifinals for the second time in as many seasons. Last week: No. 2. 

5. Ensworth (18-10) — Mr. Basketball finalist James Wiseman and the Tigers suffered a season-ending loss to Brentwood Academy in the Division II-AA semifinals. Last week: No. 5. 

6. Brentwood (26-9) — The Bruins, who suffered a 53-45 loss to Oak Ridge in Wednesday’s Class AAA quarterfinals, notched their fourth state tournament appearance in five seasons. Last week: No. 6. 

7. Oakland (24-8) — The Patriots, who advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 2006-07, suffered a 59-40 Class AAA quarterfinal defeat to Southwind. Last week: No. 7. 

8. Blackman (26-5) — The Blaze’s string of five consecutive Class AAA state tournament appearances was snapped with a 72-68 sectional defeat to East Hamilton. Last week: No. 8. 

9. Summit (23-7) — The regular-season District 11-AAA champions notched their first region tournament victory in program history before bowing out to eventual state semifinalist Independence. Last week: No. 9.

10. Cane Ridge (24-6) — The Ravens, led by junior guard Damion Baugh, captured their first District 12-AAA tournament title in program history this season. Last week: NR.
