High school roundup: Oakland baseball takes first in series with Siegel

Oakland's baseball team scored five runs in the second inning and never trailed again, taking a 9-5 win over defending Class AAA champ Siegel, knocking off the Stars 9-5 at Siegel High Wednesday in the first of a three-game series.

The Patriots improved to 3-2 while the Stars fell to 6-2 on the season.

After falling down 5-0, Siegel cut the lead to 6-5 before Oakland erupted for three more runs in the top of the sixth.

Oakland took advantage of five walks and five Siegel errors.

Tennessee commitment Jacob Pennington had a big day, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Oakland. Jackson Cauthen added two RBIs while Seth Matlock scored two runs.

Louisville commitment Drew Benefield had three hits, including two doubles, a run scored and two RBIs to lead Siegel.

The two teams play in the second game of the series at Oakland at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Riverdale, Stewarts Creek split: Riverdale and Stewarts Creek both tossed shutouts in splitting a doubleheader at W.T. Jones Field Wednesday.

The Red Hawks won the first game 2-0 while the Warriors took the nightcap 1-0.

Pitching ruled the day as Stewarts Creek (2-3. 4-4) tossed a six-hit shutout in the first game and then had a combined no-hitter going in the nightcap (Daniel Freeman, Brandon Rooney) until the sixth when Brayden Siren's single broke things up.

Both teams scored on unearned runs as the Red Hawks took advantage of three Riverdale errors in the second inning to score two unearned runs.

Riverdale (4-1, 7-1-1) plated an unearned run in the second inning of the second game. Tanner Cunningham earned the win, scattering five hits.

The two finish up the three-game series Thursday at Stewarts Creek at 6.

In the other 7-AAA contest on the day, La Vergne (1-3, 1-4) earned its first win with a 2-0 shutout over rival Smyrna (0-4, 1-4). The two will play games on Wednesday and Thursday to wrap up the series.

Softball

Central Magnet rolls: Central Magnet's softball team took a 14-1 win over Eagleville Wednesday.

Kali Penny and Faith McCaghren combined on a two-hitter for the Lady Tigers (6-2).

Ashley Dyer went 3-for-4 with two triples and three RBIs to lead the Lady Tigers while Abby Frazier was 3-for-4 with a double, Alyssa Ward was 2-for-2 with a double, Addie Baird homered and drove home three and Penny was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

In other softball action, Stewarts Creek took a 9-AAA win over La Vergne, 6-1.

Soccer

La Vergne and Oakland settled for a 0-0 tie in District 7-AAA action Wednesday. The game was rescheduled from Tuesday.

Smyrna captured a 5-4 win over rival Stewarts Creek in another rescheduled game.

Robell Rabte had two goals and an assist for the Red Hawks while Andrew Udulutch also scored twice for Stewarts Creek.

Central Magnet 3, Shelbyville 0: The Tigers tossed the shutout as Luis Sanchez scored twice and Ethan Penny added another goal.

Nick Hamlett drew a penalty kick to get the scoring started as Central Magnet drew its fifth consecutive clean sheet.

The Tigers improved to 5-0 with the win.
