MEDINA — Crockett County opened the season with a 1-0 victory over South Gibson in a District 13 A-AA contest on Thursday.

Here are five takeaways from the game:

South Gibson County High School hosted Crockett County High School, Thursday, March 23, 2017 in Medina. Crockett defeated South Gibson, 1-0.

1. Despite having one senior on the team, Crockett County proved that this team can't be overlooked this season. The Cavaliers have multiple sophomores in the starting lineup, but they played well as a team to open the season with a win.

2. Playing a district opponent is never easy, especially one that like South Gibson, which was favored to be one of the top two teams in this district. Crockett County is now 1-0 in District 13 A-AA with five games to play. South Gibson (2-1) is now 1-1 in district play with four district games to play.

3. Crockett County has a leader in goal with junior Raymundo Cuevas. Cuevas made some key saves down the stretch to keep South Gibson from scoring the tying goal. He will need to be a leader and keep the group of sophomore defenders in front of him organized.

4. South Gibson is struggling offensively. After losing 49 of the 58 goals scored last year, the Hornets are still looking for that player ready to be the lead forwards. South Gibson scored two goals in both win this season (over Trenton Peabody and Milan). The Hornets outshot Crockett County 9-5 with shots on goal.

5. The strength of this South Gibson team is defense. The Hornets' defense did give up its first goal defensively, as the first two goals scored this season were by a penalty kick and an own goal. They also held Crockett County to five shots on goal.
